Nils Torvalds’ office

Please note that the European Elections in May 2019 can bring major changes to this Internship Program.

Who is MEP Nils Torvalds?

Nils Torvalds has been a Member of the European Parliament since 2012. He was re-elected on May 25th, 2014 with 29,355 personal votes. He is Committee member in the Environmental Committee, substitute member in the Committee on Budget and the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs as well as in the Committee on Fisheries. In addition, Torvalds is a member of the Special Committee on Tax Rulings and Other Measures Similar in Nature or Effect. Besides the regular committee work, Torvalds is chairman of the Intergroup for Minorities. Torvalds is also active with issues outside the scope of the committees he is a member of.

What are your tasks as an intern and what kind of experiences will you gain?

The internship at MEP Nils Torvalds’ office is very diverse. Some of the tasks include assisting in monitoring the committee work. Due to the broad range of important questions outside the scope of the work in the committees in which Torvalds is a member, his team is monitoring these topics. The intern can get the responsibility to monitor some issues together with another team member on behalf of Nils Torvalds. Furthermore, the intern will write articles, draft press releases, coordinate newsletters and update the website, among other tasks. The intern will also undertake communications outside the office and prepare answers to letters addressed to Torvalds.

Alongside the work at the office, there are possibilities to participate at interesting meetings in the Parliament or in Brussels in order to get a comprehensive view of the Parliament’s work. Since the European Parliament sessions are in Strasbourg 12 weeks a year, the intern will have the chance to attend them for one or two weeks. The intern works in a dynamic team with three co-workers in Brussels and one in Finland. Ability to multitask while working in a high-paced environment is an advantage. The work days can be long, but they are compensated with fun and interesting tasks and opportunities. The internship provides deeper insight into the European Parliament and decision-making in Europe.

How much is the stipend?

The stipend is 1300€ per month. The intern is responsible for travel costs and for finding an apartment.
